Dish towel, originally designed for the education space of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam. The towel shows the 1655 painting 'Kalme zee met zeilschepen' (Calm sea with sailing ships) by Jan van de Cappelle (1626-1679), part of the Boijmans collection.
The painting shows a number of ships anchored on a body of calm water. Van de Cappelle was specialized in these types of 'calm seas', showing all kinds of different ships together in an atmosphere of languid waiting. Studio Makkink & Bey reflects with the contrary of calmness, showing present bulk transport, piracy and Barbie through illustrations and word art woven into the towel.
